Writing & Word

(October 2023 / November 2023 issue)

What makes an impression needs expression—impressive expression through expressive impressions. We gather impressions everywhere, every day. In our daily routine, impressions quickly slip away. In the evening, we rarely remember what color the bus driver's hat was or the order of the traffic lights on our way to work. They disappear into insignificance, so fleeting was the moment when they caught our attention, and after a few days at the latest, they are completely forgotten.

Imagination, resourcefulness, mental imagery, illusion, inventiveness, utopia, soap bubble, creative spirit – what exactly is imagination? Lying in a green meadow, gazing at the sky, I watch the clouds drift by. Doesn't one of them look like a dog, or perhaps more like a rabbit? And that slightly darker cloud in the distance, doesn't it look like the head of an old man whose cap is slowly creeping upwards?

Printed letters or cursive script—which was better for learning the Latin alphabet we use today? Opinions differ. The same is true for the question of which script is the oldest: Sumerian cuneiform, Egyptian hieroglyphs, Chinese characters, or perhaps the ancient European Danube script? It's both incredible and fascinating how differentiated the characters of these scripts, thousands of years old, are. And how laborious their production was. How does this compare to today? What has become of your handwriting?
